National Institute of Innovation and Transfer in Agricultural Technology (INTA) of the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock of Costa Rica

Project information

The agricultural sector in Costa Rica claims a high share of water extraction. Costa Rica is a water-abundant country, the compounded impacts of extreme weather events, land degradation, soil erosion, and water salinization increasingly call for the efficient management of water resources. This is particularly the case for the North Pacific Coast which is located within the Central America Dry Corridor, the region most exposed to drought in CA. The development of protected cultivation in greenhouses equipped with technologies to perform precision farming can strengthen the country’s capacity to curve these climate change-induced negative impacts.

Main Objective:

Deployment of a climate-smart greenhouse pilot project for the purpose of research and development (R&D), and the provision of evidence-based recommendations for implementing, operating, and managing climate-smart greenhouses that address sustainability and commercial viability. As well as fortify the agricultural supply chain, thereby increasing food supply to domestic and international markets, South Korea in particular.

Expected Result:

Support the Costa Rican government in the deployment of a pilot climate-smart greenhouse. The sustainable operation and management of the pilot climate-smart greenhouse is expected to further stimulate agricultural R&D. Also, build adaptive capacity and resilience against climate fluctuations, and improving the productivity, nutritional value, and quality of agricultural products in Costa Rica. The proliferation of climate-smart technologies can revitalize the national economy by reducing operating costs, generating income, creating new markets, and improving food security.
