The realization of key activities and consultancies that will lay the groundwork for a potential PPP, considering the technical, economic, financial, regulatory, and socio-environmental viability of the rail network for freight and passenger transport in the Dominican Republic. Moreover, establish the foundation to advance green urban transport and efficient international trade.
Evaluate the integration and connectivity of the Dominican Republic’s two most populous and productive cities, Santiago de los Caballeros (“Santiago”) and Santo Domingo, which together account for one third of the country’s total population, and to link these two urban areas with La Haina port.
The deployment of cargo and passenger rail connectivity and strengthening of regional integration between Santiago, Santo Domingo and Haina Port is expected to unlock new economic opportunities in the Dominican Republic through greater mobility and social inclusion. The Government of the Dominican Republic recognizes that insufficient development, coverage, and integration of public transport is a significant barrier to employment, continued economic growth, and shared prosperity in the country’s most populous urban centers. while also reducing congestion and pollution.
